Analysis
Plaintiffs moved to seal exhibits and portions of their opposition to a motion in limine, arguing the materials contained confidential deposition excerpts and sensitive business information. The court granted the motion, finding compelling reasons to seal the documents until further order.

Plaintiffs' Motion to Seal Documents in Support of Plaintiffs' Opposition to Defendants' Motion in Limine No. 7 is granted.“Based on the foregoing, the Court finds that there are compelling reasons to GRANT the Motion. It is ORDERED that Sealed Materials shall be SEALED until further order of this Court.” | agree with court The court applied the 'compelling reasons' standard, which is the correct standard for sealing documents in civil litigation. The court identified specific justifications: the materials are marked confidential under a protective order, and they contain sensitive business information (product offers and development status) whose disclosure would cause substantial harm. This satisfies the requirement for a particularized showing of harm. |
The order itself: sound with gaps — The order is procedurally correct and applies the appropriate 'compelling reasons' standard. It cites a district court case from the Northern District of California, which is persuasive but not binding on the Southern District of California. While the order does not cite the specific Ninth Circuit precedent establishing the 'compelling reasons' standard (e.g., *Foltz v. State Farm Mut. Auto. Ins. Co.* or *In re San Diego Gas & Elec. Co.*), the application of the standard is clear and supported by the specific facts recited (protective order designation and competitive harm). The reliance on a non-binding district court case is a minor gap, but the legal conclusion is sound.
